A heavy truck is any motor vehicle with a net vehicle weight of more than 5,000 lbs. The registration is based on a declared gross vehicle weight (GVW) made by the owner.
Generally, heavy trucks are used for carrying goods (pick-up truck) or equipped with a connective device for drawing a fifth wheel trailer (truck tractor/semi). Trailers must be registered separately.
Trucks weighing between 5,000 and 7,999 lbs.
Registrations for trucks weighing between 5,000 and 7,999 lbs. expire on the first registered owners birthday. As long as you do not have any stops/holds or need to show proof of insurance for your registration, you can renew online.
Trucks weighing between 8,000 and 26,000 lbs.
Registrations for trucks weighing between 8,000 and 26,000 lbs. must be renewed by December 31st every year, unless otherwise noted (i.e. 6 month registrations).
Customers must show proof of Florida insurance or Florida insurance affidavit to renew.
Registrations can be renewed by mail, or at one of the Tax Collector’s Service Centers.
Trucks weighing between 26,001 and 54,999 lbs.
Registrations for trucks weighing between 26,001 and 54,999 lbs. must be renewed by December 31st every year, unless otherwise noted (i.e., 6-month registrations).
Customers will need to show a Certificate of Liability Insurance to renew. Certificate of Insurance should also include the combined single limitations. Your Certificate of Liability must meet the following requirements:
Registrations for trucks weighing 55,000 lbs. and more must be renewed by December 31st every year, unless otherwise noted (i.e., 6-month registrations).
Customers will need to show the following:
*Form 2290 is not required if heavy truck was acquired within less than 60 days
