VEHICLE TITLES AND REGISTRATIONS

Any time the ownership of a motor vehicle (including mobile home and vessels) changes, you must apply for a title and registration in your name. If you purchased a vehicle (new or used) from a Florida dealership, the dealer is required by law to process the application for title and registration. Please contact the selling dealership with any paperwork questions.

 

Please read through the options below and select the one, or ones, that best fit your needs.  

If you purchased a vehicle (new or used) from a Florida dealership, the dealer is required by law to process the application for title. 

If you purchased a new vehicle from an out-of-state dealership, an application for title may be processed by mail, at a Tax Collector’s Service Center or our partner Tag Agency. Find the location most convenient for you. If you want to complete an application by mail for a vehicle being titled for the first time, please use this address:  Lee County Tax Collector, PO Box 1590, Fort Myers, FL 33902-1590.

The following items are needed in addition to the completed application for title

  • A Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) 
  • Each applicant must sign the application for the title (this is done at the office if application is in person) 
  • One of the following proofs of identity must be provided (in-person applicants must provide original identity document; for mailed transactions, submit a legible photocopy):
    • Valid driver license or ID card issued by Florida or another state (includes U.S. territories) 
    • Valid passport or passport card from any country
    • Valid Canadian driver license or ID card
  • A bill of sale or invoice listing the purchase price, sales tax paid, and any trade-in allowance (please note, additional sales tax may be due) 
  • A Federal odometer disclosure statement
  • Any applicable lien holder information 
  • Initial registration and license plate fees or transfer of current license plate
  • Vehicle insurance issued by a Florida licensed insurance agent is required to obtain a license plate/registration for any motor vehicle with four or more wheels. If you own a vehicle from out-of-state or purchased a vehicle from out-of-state, vehicle owners are required to provide the following items: 

  • The out-of-state title certificate assigned to you 
  • Odometer reading disclosure is required by Federal law for any transfer of ownership, unless exempt
  • Each applicant must sign the application for the title (this is done at the office if application is in person) 
  • If your title is being held by your lienholder or your vehicle is leased, please complete and submit a Request for Title Letter to your lienholder/lessor requesting your title be released to the Lee County Tax Collector’s office. Once our office receives the original title, we will mail a letter directing you to visit your selected service center for processing.
  • One of the following proofs of identity must be provided (in-person applicants must provide original identity document; for mailed transactions, submit a legible photocopy):
    • Valid driver license or ID card issued by Florida or another state (includes U.S. territories) 
    • Valid passport or passport card from any country
    • Valid Canadian driver license or ID card
  • A properly completed VIN Verification
  • Vehicle insurance issued by a Florida licensed insurance agent is required to obtain a license plate/registration for any motor vehicle with four or more wheels.   • Florida Sales Tax may be due if the vehicle was purchased less than six months prior to bringing the vehicle to Florida (proof of any sales tax paid to another state will be required, also the full 6% Florida Sales Tax and any applicable local option tax is due on all vehicles imported from foreign countries)

When transferring ownership of a vehicle in Florida, the title must be completed before visiting a Tax Collector’s Service Center, including:

  • The Florida title properly completed by the seller, including the name of the purchaser and current odometer reading (for non-exempt vehicles).
  • The Florida title properly completed by each purchaser, including signature and printed name.
  • Each applicant must sign the application for title. This can be done at time of transfer. A power of attorney is required for any applicant not present.

You must also bring one of the following original documents as proof of identity (for mailed transactions, submit a legible photocopy):

  • Valid driver license or ID card issued by Florida or another state (includes any U.S. territory) 
  • Valid passport or passport card from any country
  • Valid Canadian driver license or ID card

Applicable sales tax will be collected at the time of titling. Individuals or business entities entitled to any sales tax exemptions must provide applicable supporting documents.

ELECTRIC, PAPER & DUPLICATE TITLES

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) has a system to electronically hold titles for vehicle owners. You can have a title printed and mailed to you by using the MyDMV Portal.  It will cost $2.50 and take 7-10 business days to arrive. 

If you need a paper or duplicate title before that, the registered owner of the vehicle can request a duplicate registration online or in personIn order to obtain a duplicate title, please complete and submit the Duplicate Title Application, schedule your appointment and bring along with a copy of valid identification for all titled owners. You may also mail the application to: Lee County Tax Collector, PO BOX 1590, Fort Myers, Florida 33902-1590. When you make an appointment, choose “Florida Registration Renewal/Replacement” as the service type. The cost for a same day printed title is $10 in our office. 

REGISTRATIONS & ONLINE RENEWAL

Initial registration and license plate fees are charged for new or additional vehicles for Florida drivers. Generally, vehicles registered to an individual will expire at midnight on their birthday.

Vehicle registrations must be renewed on or before the designated expiration date.

When registering a vehicle, you will need proof of current Florida vehicle insurance, including the insurance company’s name, policy number, and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the insured vehicle.

Online Registration Renewal (Not available for commercial trucks weighing 26,001 lbs. or more.) 

If you renew online by 3 p.m. on a business day, you may select to pick-up your order the same day at the Service Center location of your choice or have it mailed to you.

Check your mail! As a courtesy, we mail renewal notices to Florida registered vehicle owners approximately three weeks prior to the vehicle owner’s birth month (or month in which the renewal is due). Be on the lookout for the notice which has information to help you renew your registration quickly and easily. 

The registration notice can be returned for renewal by mail in the envelope provided.
