Motorcycle license

Anyone operating any two- or three-wheel motorcycle, whose engine size is more than 50cc, is required to have a motorcycle endorsement on their driver license or hold a ‘Motorcycle Only’ license.

Anyone driving a motorcycle in Florida without an endorsement is violating the law.

obtaining a motorcycle endorsement

To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, you

  • Must hold at least a valid Class E operator’s driver license
  • Complete motorcycle safety course with an authorized provider
  • After successfully passing the motorcycle safety course, you must obtain your endorsement within (1) year. If the motorcycle endorsement is not added to your license during the one (1) year grace period, the course completion card as well as the “PASS” waiver status is considered invalid, and you must retake the full motorcycle safety course.
  • Once you have passed the motorcycle safety course, visit one of our service centers, inform us that you completed the required course, provide proper ID and pay the required fee and your Class E license will be issued with a motorcycle endorsement.

OBTAINING A “MOTORCYCLE ONLY” DRIVER LICENSE

To obtain a “motorcycle only” license you must

  • Be at least 16 years old, and if under 18, hold at least a Learner’s License for one year with no traffic convictions.
  • Pass the same knowledge exam(s) required for a regular Class E driver license.
  • Complete motorcycle safety course with an authorized provider
  • After you complete the Basic Rider’s Course (BRC) or BRCu, visit one of our service centers, inform us that you completed the required course, provide proper ID and pay the required fee and your “Motorcycle Only” license will be issued.

Note: If you are coming from any U.S. state (other than Alabama) and your license is endorsed for motorcycle operation, Florida will reciprocate the endorsement and the motorcycle course will not be required. (Alabama motorcycle endorsements cannot be carried over because their testing regulations do not meet Florida’s requirements.)
