Customers must renew their Florida driver license or ID card on or before the listed expiration date to avoid a late fee being assessed.

Those with a driver license can renew up to 18 months in advance of expiration. ID Cards and CDLs with HazMat endorsement can be renewed up to 12 months prior to expiration.

Florida Driver License or ID Card renewal must be completed in-person if:
  • You have changed your name since your last renewal (ex. by marriage or divorce)
  • Your last renewal was completed online or by mail
  • Your driver license has the word “Temporary” on it or need to change your current immigration status
  • Your license has been expired more than 12 months

If one of these applies to you, you will need to come into one of our offices with the required documents to renew your license. Booking an appointment (choose service type “Driver License or ID Renewal”) is recommended but not required for this service type (unless renewing a CDL with HazMat endorsement, in which case you will choose “CDL HazMat Endorsement/Fingerprinting”).

If none of these apply, you should be able to renew your license or ID card online through the FLHSMV’s MyDMV Portal.

Note: US Citizens and US Permanent Residents requesting a replacement, renewal, to switch their driver license class, or downgrade to an ID Card who have been issued a Real ID-compliant Florida credential only need to bring in the required documentation specifically related to changes being requested (name, address, or citizenship status) from what was listed on your last Florida license, learner’s permit, or ID card that was issued in-person.

Customers who have changed their name, address, or citizenship status are required to obtain an updated driver license or ID card within 30 days. Customers can also replace their driver license or ID card prior to its expiration if the credential is lost or stolen. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recommends reporting a stolen or lost driver license or ID card to local law enforcement to help protect against identity theft.

Customers can replace their credential online using the FLHSMV’s MyDMV Portal. Credentials replaced online should be received in the mail within 1-3 weeks. Note: Online processing is not available if current driver license/ID card lists “Temporary” on the front.
